Listening Chronicles #2
Listening Chronicles is a series where I document the podcasts I'm listening to and those I would recommend.
Hello!
Welcome to a public journal of all my podcast listening.
This week has been a bit slow, didn't get a chance to listen to too many episodes. Probably because I was editing an episode of Legal Synthesis, a podcast where my friend Sandesh and I try to understand law, finance and tech.
Let's dive into this week's podcasts.
Podcasts This Week
Land of The Giants | The Netflix Effect
I am sure many of you watch Vox videos on a daily basis. They're well-produced, informative and entertaining to watch. You'll then be happy to find out that they have an amazing podcast series called Land of The Giants.
The premise is simple, each season the show does a deep dive into a prominent company that is changing our society. The first season was about Amazon and everything from its history, to how it has changed the way we think of businesses.
The 2nd Season is about Netflix. The show dropped in, right at the time when everyone around the world went into self-quarantine. The streaming industry has seen an increase in the number of subscribers in millions and just last week, Netflix released around 20 different titles for India alone. It's insane.
The season is a deep dive of how Netflix has changed the way we consume movies and tv shows. From its unique work culture, to how it made some big bets with House of Cards (it's first major hit) and the time when Netflix almost crumbled. The episodes cover 7 different aspects of Netflix's history.
It is exciting, and each episode does a good job of covering the company's story. If you're interested even remotely about Netflix's influence on our lives, you should listen to this.
Thrilling Tales of Modern Capitalism | Fortnite and Epic Games
Okay,
I was recommended this show by one of the listeners of my podcast. It's basically a short look at some companies and their story. Not a deep dive like Land of The Giants, but 20-25 minutes of good narratives, which will inform you why a company is making the buzz these days.
I started the podcast very recently, haven't gotten a chance to listen to all of them yet. This episode about Epic Games and Fortnite was a lot of fun to listen to. The host interviews an 8-year-old kid, about his interest in Fornite and then they try and make sense of how the video game industry is the biggest threat to Netflix and not the other streaming companies.
Imaginary Worlds | Dumbledore's Army (Updated)
So, Imaginary Worlds is an amazing podcast about all things fantasy, sci-fi and our creative capacity.
In 2016, the host Eric Molinsky released a series of episodes about how the Harry Potter universe, inspired a generation of people in accepting their identities, and progressive activists.
Now, we all know, how JK Rowling recently alienated a lot of her fans with her views on transgender rights. This episode is an update from (among other things) an interview Eric conducted with Jackson Bird, who was the head of the Harry Potter Alliance. It's about how he's handling the cognitive dissonance of being inspired by the Harry Potter series and the message JK Rowling is sending at the moment.
For those of you who are interested in other fantasy worlds, check out this playlist about all the different themes covered by this podcast here.
Mission ISRO with Harsha Bhogle
So, the trailer of this new series is out. The podcast is going to be about the story of ISRO and India's fantastic space journey. It's going to be narrated by Harsha Bhogle, and we will see a lot of the behind the scenes along the way.
I think Harsha Bhogle's voice should be enough reason for you to follow this podcast and start listening. I am looking forward to it.
Tuesdays with Mummy | Why we're starting a podcast?
So, Tejas Rao's newsletter Curd Rice Daily is something I've subscribed to over the last 6 months. He always shares some of the most interesting things he finds over the internet.
Recently, he started his own podcast and the premise is simple, conversations with his mother where they document their leanings.
I've just heard the first episode till now, and it was a lot of fun.
Cast from the Past
So, I changed the name of this section to a much better one (shout out to Shouri Bhat for this suggestion !).
Radiolab | Colours
This is one of Radiolab's most popular episodes. It's one of the finest audio experiences of Radiolab. The reason I am sharing this right now is, I have been watching Latif Nasser's Netflix documentary series - Connected. He's one of the people who helped produce an updated of this particular episode.
It's all about colours. They introduce a sea creature than can see a rainbow far beyond what humans can experience. In fact, this episode is a must for anyone who's interested in what an audio documentary experience feels like.
The people at Radiolab tried to make you listen to the colors and take a deep dive into why we see what we see.
This is an update on the same episode.
What have you been listening to in the last week? What are your recommendations? Let me know!
